Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, but not all of us have that special someone to spend a romantic day with. If you’re feeling lonely, you can always turn to video games to ease the pain! And if you need some of that feel good romantic energy, here are the couples in video games that give us a reason to live, laugh, and love.
Nathan and Elena (Uncharted Series)
Whether it’s having to fight through zombie Nazis, taking different life paths, or their fair share of lovers’ quarrels, Nathan and Elena have a fair amount of strife in their relationship. But, despite all the destinations, new flames, and evil organizations in their path, they keep finding each other and growing together. No matter what shenanigans they get into, Nathan will do anything to get Elena out of a war zone, and inversely Elena will fly out to forgive and save Nathan when he’s royally messed up. Sure, it’s not always sunshine and rainbows with these two, but they’re a great look at how to mature as a couple and adapt to the changes without rolling over on your needs.
Link and Marin (Zelda: Link’s Awakening)
Our editor made the joke that we could’ve easily done an entire best couples in gaming list that was just Link and another romantic interest. And while we’re fans of Link x Mipha, Link x Malon, and of course Link x Zelda, we’re saps who love us a tragic love story. Link and Marin can never actually be together because, spoilers, Marin’s just part of the Wind Fish’s dream. But that doesn’t make their date on the beach or their quests together any less adorable. And when they have their duet together, it feels like we just added another heart piece to our life force.
Cloud and Aerith (FF7)
Speaking of tragic romances, there are few more Shakespearean doomed romances in gaming than the iconic pair of Cloud and Aerith. Aerith brings this beautiful sense of wonder and charm to Cloud’s more stoic demeanor. Plus, we’re a sucker for the tragic romance blossoming at a short lived carnival cliché. Here’s hoping the FF7 Part 2 remake doesn’t break our hearts all over again. And to the Tifa fans out there? Get wrecked.
Gregg and Angus (Night In The Woods)
Being the only gay couple in a small town is rough, but Gregg and Angus have each other for motivation to get out. Whether they’re working boring shifts at the Snack Falcon, or managing the Video Outpost “Too,” it’s so refreshing to see such a tangible effort to find a better life together. They also balance each other out so well, with Gregg’s manic craziness bringing excitement to their relationship, and Angus’ chill demeanor helping them both keep a cool head. That is, unless Mae’s convincing Gregg to bring a metallic monstrosity back to their apartment as a random gift for Angus.
Alphys and Undyne (Undertale)
Sure, they’re pretty much that classic pairing of nerd and jock that was popularized in John Hughes films, but Alphys and Undyne are maybe the cutest iteration of the trope. Undyne doesn’t really even like the things Alphys is passionate about, finding them sort of lame. Instead, she loves Alphys for who she is, and the fact Alphys is passionate about something to begin with. At the end of the day, you just have to love a big strong warrior getting a crush on a nerdy, anime-loving scientist.
Mario, Bowser, and Peach (Mario Series)
You can’t fool us anymore, these three should be a throuple. It only makes sense considering the fact that they bicker and capture and fight, then also kart, play tennis, golf, and smash (hehe) together. Maybe these three haven’t embraced the truth themselves, but it only makes sense for the plumber, the king, and the princess to just agree to a romantic relationship between the three of them. It would be far more mature than this elaborate heist they construct every game.
So, feeling any less lonely? No? Oh…well, don’t let the Valentines get you too down! Why not distract yourself by letting us know your favorite couples in video games in the comments? And while you’re at it, don’t forget to pick up some of that discount candy on February 15th!
The Mario, Bowser, Peach throuple idea gave me a good laugh, and after playing Odyssey I can totally imagine it. I wanna see Mario and Bowser have a father-son day with Bowser Jr. xD
For another great gaming couple I’d have to say Geralt and Yennefer from the Witcher 3 (despite going head over heels for Triss in Witcher 1 and 2.)
I also have a special place in my heart for the romance in Kingdom Hearts. Sora goes through so many trials and tribulations so he can reunite with the one person who makes him feel complete…. Kaira? HA! Not a chance. We all know Riku was the one Sora obsessed after. Understandably 😉
